At the 3 Vital Questions® and TED*® trainer certification in 2021 I was asked to sum up how I felt about what I’d come to learn and experience within the program led by co-founders, David Emerald and Donna Zajonc, and amongst a cohort of a dozen or so fellow professional trainers.
I couldn’t help but think about the six human needs, something I’d learned about over a decade ago.
The Six Human Needs are fundamental to every single person and shape how we live our lives. No matter what country you are from, what your socioeconomic status is, no matter what your race, your religion, your colour or your creed; no matter what your goals, desires, values, morals or dreams are – we all share the same needs.
Tony Robbins: Why Do You Do What You Do?
I know that if something we do meets at least three (3) of our six human needs, either in a positive or negative way, you will get hooked or addicted to that thing!
Our six human needs are:
Certainty | Assurance you can avoid pain and gain pleasure, safety and security |
Uncertainty / Variety | The need for the unknown, change, new stimuli, adventure |
Significance | Feeling unique, of value, important, special or needed, independence |
Connection / Love | A strong feeling of closeness or union with someone or something |
Growth | An expansion of capacity, capability or understanding |
Contribution | A sense of service and focus on helping, giving to and supporting others |
Taking a deep dive to understand the 3 Vital Questions® and TED*® at a level of learning that permitted me to become a safe, professional practitioner in delivering them to my clients, met all six of my human needs. It positively met them. So yes, I’m hooked!

The three most important human needs it met for me are:
- Love and Connection: to take the 3 Vital Questions beyond an intellectual understanding, it includes the practice of self-care and mindfulness. An awareness of the need for self-compassion and non-judgment. The 3 Vital Questions is about developing a safe new supportive language for honest communication. That is, communication with ourselves and with all people we relate to. Which then contributes towards giving us what we all want for ourselves, those we love and for the greater good.
- Growth with honesty. Pausing to see how I have related to myself and loved ones, and other relationships including with the people I’ve had work in my company over the years. I sat with my awareness that I had the roles of the DDT (dreaded drama triangle) playing out constantly since I was a child. Acceptance that that was the past. Kindness to self that I can fall into those default roles but with awareness I can try to understand why and make change. Acknowledging change is only possible through conscious choice and conscious action. I let go of having to have it all figured out. Having a wonderfully simple framework to reach out to, has let me grow in courage and strength, and a gentle determination to bring good to the world.
- The 3 Vital Questions framework is about contributing to the greater good. It does contribute to the greater good, on a very large scale already, having been brought to companies and individuals for over 10 years in the US alone. The 3 Vital Questions is work that positively impacts and empowers all people, in all the roles they play in work and life. I get to contribute by training people to live and work from the 3 Vital Questions and TED* frameworks, showing that they can learn to choose their response to life, regardless of the circumstances. I’m creating that ripple effect by putting this work into practice for myself first and in all my most important relationships.
Companies and individuals have weathered some of the most extraordinary times ever these past two-plus years. It’s time to integrate and leverage the benefits of the 3 Vital Questions and TED* frameworks in terms of how we operate as human beings and as business and community leaders.
I wish I had come across the 3 Vital Questions® and TED*® 20 years ago, when I was in the early stages of entrepreneurship, starting up what was to become a business beyond my dreams and becoming the employer of my first few team members, which eventually tallied many hundreds of people! Oh, yes, my lessons were learned the hard way, that’s for sure!
I can honestly say “I’m All In!” and have committed to sharing the 3 Vital Questions and TED* through my coaching and training practice and in my own relationships so I can make the world a better place.
