3 Questions you really need to be asking yourself when you intuitively know it’s time to take action towards life-long change. Change that will lead you to live a more meaningful life.
In my experience as a Life Coach and Mentor to Women, every woman is unique. At the same time, there are many similarities in women’s lives, and in the issues that are brought to the table of their coaching experiences.
I am sharing with you 3 Questions for you to ponder in your own time. These questions are valuable keys for you to begin the process of unlocking the treasure chest of your life.
QUESTION 1: WHAT CAUSED ME TO LOSE MY LIVELINESS?
It is common for women to come into a coaching session because they feel burned out. They can’t get themselves excited enough to do even the basics, like exercising or meal planning.
They think they’re tired.
They think they’re stressed.
They think they haven’t had enough green smoothies or organic vitamins.
But almost always, there is another, less expected reason. They’ve lost a relative, or they’re having a protracted feud with their family, thinking about a divorce, worrying about what’s going to happen with their elderly parent.
They understand that they have one or likely more big personal issues*, but, surprisingly, they don’t understand the connection between those issues and the lethargy.
Something bad happens, and we don’t want to feel sad or pain:
- We use all our energy to suppress it.
- We keep our real selves tucked behind our superwoman mask.
- Then we become exhausted from the exertion.
- Then we resign ourselves to a reality in which we can’t change the bad thing, or anything at all.
You need to figure out what caused you to erect that brick wall smack-bang in the middle of your life, and gently start the work to remove it, to reveal the path to your more meaningful life.
QUESTION 2: HOW DO I KICK-START MY HIGHEST SELF?
Just about every single woman who starts coaching with me comes with a long, sinister list of all the things she’s supposedly not good or not successful at: her relationships, her social skills, her failure to make homemade scones. Not judging here, I’m the same. I look at a financial balance sheet and cannot comprehend the numbers, no matter how many ways I’ve been shown how to.
None of us can build on weaknesses.
Think about what would happen if I decided to start a company built on providing financial advice. It’s possible that if I dug deep, applied myself to accounting studies and mastered it, I might (sort of) make it, if I hadn’t poked my eyes out with a stick first! Just typing this paragraph I could feel my energy begin to drain!
But why would I try doing that? Why would any of us spend our lives consciously choosing a struggle whose end reward is not joy?
In other words: Why would we try to kick-start our worst selves?
Instead, I focused on fine-tuning my coaching practice to use my strengths and passion from 17 years as CEO of a business. I took what I knew from the strategic planning process of a successful business, and so much more, then adapted everything I learnt to create coaching programs for women.
Effectively, I now get to work every day with the women I coach or mentor, navigating their unique treasure maps of business and life. I get to support these beautiful, intelligent women, to achieve their ultimate goals! You can even see I wrote that with a smile and a burst of sunshine.
Why?
- Because I am talented and excited by strategy, innovation, change and vision.
- I enjoy asking questions that facilitate deep thinking and change.
- It is a strength that supports my other strengths.
My advice: It doesn’t matter what you’re actually or supposedly BAD at. It matters what you’re GOOD at and how much time you spend doing that.
QUESTION 3: WHO DO I WANT TO BE?
So many of us spend a lot of time wondering, “Who am I?”
“Who Am I?” is a question about what’s already happened to you. You’re basing your answers on the question of the past definition of yourself.
When you’re looking for change, to live a more meaningful life, you need to think about what might happen. Who you might be tomorrow, or the next day, week, month or a year from now! People usually think they’re doing this, but they only go halfway.
Say, you’re a Director of Nursing of an aged care facility. You might know you want a new job or you want to get out of your old one. You might even understand that you don’t want to work at a large aged care site again.
But have you considered whether you want to work at a small country facility, using your nursing skills; re-skill and move into acute care; or establish your own expert dementia consultancy practice?
Do you want to provide nursing care face-to-face, set up processes and standards so others may provide the best of care, manage a team of healthcare professionals or help families navigate the difficulties that come with a loved one suffering dementia?
Do you want to dump nursing and management and become a pilot or a marriage celebrant?
What would you do if you could do anything—instead of just taking the next logical step in the small universe where you already live(d)?
There is a reason they call it a leap of faith! Before you do it, imagining the landscape you’ll hit when you land on the other side of the void, in all its possibility and detail, will determine how many mountains, valleys and rivers the treasure map of your future, more meaningful life, will contain.
