We have access to so much abundance, so why the widespread unhappiness, anxiety, fear and depression?

An ‘elephant in the room’ is described as: ‘a major problem or controversial issue which is obviously present but is avoided as a subject for discussion.’

Never before in recorded history, have we had access to so much abundance!

Abundance in terms of:

  • material wealth,
  • access to healthcare,
  • diversity and availability of food,
  • education,
  • travel, and
  • communication.

The list seems endless for those of us in Western cultures.

There is, however, an ‘elephant in the room’ – widespread unhappiness, anxiety, fear and depression!

The incredibly high pace of change has brought many benefits. Why, then the unhappiness, high stress, anxiety and depression levels?

Is it possible that we have not passed on wisdom and skill-sets for:
  • coping with change,
  • finding out who we are,
  • locating peace and happiness within,
  • remaining calm in intense circumstances,
from generation to generation?

There is a saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child ‘

Is the nuclear family in Western cultures, partly to blame? Is the Western way of not living in an extended family environment, in the same village, causing us to miss the opportunity to pass on wisdom and skill-sets from our elders to our children?

In our own experience, my husband and I, with 3 young daughters, moved to Noosa from Sydney.

We left behind our extended family for a better lifestyle. My dad joined us for the new adventure in his retirement. Young families, living without the close network of family, is a common occurrence. Our daughters benefited greatly. They talk fondly of the times they had with their Poppy, learning to fish, reading books, drawing and playing.

In the next few years my mum also relocated to live close-by (beautiful cook, quilter, sewer, creator). My Scottish in-laws came for a few years (artist, historian, cook).

Our children were so incredibly lucky. The rich tapestry of stories, experiences and lessons from their elders, and the memories as those elders pass away, are gold!

What are your thoughts about the elephant in the room?

This topic might be something for deep contemplation and re-prioritising of lives.

Your life doesn't get better by chance, it gets better by change
