What is hypnosis?
Many people believe that hypnosis isn’t real. They have seen movies, or poor stage shows, or have seen a guy on TV walking around as if he has power over the people on stage. This is so far from the truth of hypnosis it’s not funny.
Hypnosis is a natural, normal state of mind that everyone experiences every day, often more than once. Have you ever tried talking to someone who is watching TV and found it hard to get their attention? This is a naturally occurring trance state.
Here’s the legal definition:
Hypnosis is the bypass of the critical faculty. Altering a person’s belief or reality through suggestions. Following instructions. Accepting of selective thinking, thoughts, concepts and ideas that are OK by you and consistent with your values.
Is the use of hypnosis ‘legal’?
In the 1950s the American Medical Association made hypnosis legal if applied by an appropriately trained practitioner. Later, in the 1950s, the British and Australian Medical Associations followed.
What can hypnosis help me with?
Rather than speaking in general terms, the 7 areas I am certified and experienced to help make the following changes to your life, via hypnosis are:
- Quit Smoking
- Becoming Lean and Healthy
- Releasing Universal Bad Habits such as Nail Biting and Over-Eating
- Letting Go of Stress (individual or for retreats/team coaching/workshops)
- Group Relaxation (that usually forms part of a strategic retreat or workshop)
- Manifesting What You Desire
- Performance Enhancement in relation to something of interest you – work or life.
What do you mean by certified?
When I say certified, I am certified with the American Board of Hypnotherapy. In order to gain certification, I completed a course of hypnosis study, specifically focused on these 7 areas above, with the Tad James Company. Tad James (deceased since, in 2020) was one of the leaders in the field of hypnotherapy and NLP training; his course being recognised by the American Board of Hypnotherapy.
Can anyone have hypnosis done to them?
It’s never about having hypnosis done to you, it’s having hypnosis done with you. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You will not lose control, get stuck in hypnosis nor divulge any secrets. You will feel good and relaxed however you will hear and be present for the whole time. I have personally had hypnosis many times done with me. I always feel better afterwards, never worse.
Hypnosis and life coaching together are a match made in heaven
The hypnosis I do with my clients is an add-on service attached to whichever life coaching package they have with me. For hypnosis work, we need at least 1 session for what I call an ‘information gathering session’, before the hypnosis is done in a separate session.
Hypnosis fits so well with life coaching, as any coaching must do the foundational work, to be worthwhile. This level of information gathering for the hypnosis work is layered on top of that which I’d usually do, if just coming for coaching.
The information gathering lets me get a deep understanding of what you truly are seeking to achieve.
As part of my life coaching certification I also have advanced certification in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).
NLP is tailor-made for coaching.
NLP studies three areas that give it its name:
Neurology:
The mind and how we think.
Linguistics:
How we use language and how it affects us.
Programming:
How we sequence our actions to achieve our goals.
As an NLP trained coach I can understand the reality of how my client thinks and can use language very precisely to help that client achieve their goals.
So, packaging together coaching with NLP aids us in terms of what you want to achieve through hypnosis.
The NLP is about me first listening for the language you use to describe what you want to move towards and what you don’t want, yet might continue to be inadvertently focusing on.
I don’t believe in quick fixes in areas of important change in our lives. I do believe it is integral that we do the work of coaching with NLP, reframing any unhelpful language to the positive outcomes you are seeking, and checking in on any lingering limiting beliefs, before we do the hypnosis session itself.
With that quality of work and care taken; plus your willingness in taking that extra time on doing this work for yourself, you are giving the message to your body that it can trust you. That is also part of the big work that fits into the recipe of making the hypnosis that much more powerful for you.
What Steps Do You Need To Take Now?
Book in for a discovery call (no cost) so we can just talk about what it is you are desiring to change or would like to bring into your life. It’s not a coaching session. Just a chat.
Click the pink button down below, and find a time for that 30-minute chat. All the details of whichever coaching package, mixed with the type of hypnosis from the list above, we can then shape into a program to best suit your needs and timeframe, before, during and after the hypnosis work is done with you.
In the meantime, here are some words from happy clients:
I know how women feel about their problem of weight loss. I felt the same way for years, going from one diet to another, yo-yoing in weight. The diets weren’t solving the problem.
I found hypnosis, together with coaching and NLP through Susan, were what helped me change my mindset, see things different.
Now I eat only when I need re-fuelling. I’ve found ways to satisfy myself in many new and more interesting and more fulfilling ways.

If you are looking to experience a powerful, yet gentle hypnotherapy session to rid yourself of a debilitating habit, then look no further than Susan Dunlop. I highly recommend her.
Susan had the ability to build great rapport rather quickly and easily, before the session began.
Susan made me feel very comfortable during her pre-session explanation of the process, and confident that I was ready to let go of a troubling habit that I have lived with for many years.
I am grateful for Susan’s session, and I am certain it was her skills and her calming presence, that made the experience a positive one.
