Shift to Empowering Beliefs

Continuing on in the Limiting Beliefs to Empowering Beliefs 3-part series. The work of master NLP Practitioners, Joseph O’Connor and Andrea Lages was the key ingredient of my studies to add certification as an NLP Practitioner to my professional coaching toolkit in 2017.

Any negative belief make temporary. Any empowering belief, make permanent.

TEN EMPOWERING BELIEFS. Read all the way through and then run through a second time and pick one empowering belief that you intuitively think would help you in a situation you’re feeling challenged about right now.

  • If you want to understand, act. The first principle is that learning is in the doing. Change comes from action, not from intellectual understanding—action results in feedback and learning. Action agreed in coaching is moving you towards your goals, living your values and testing your beliefs about yourself and others.
  • There is no failure, only feedback. Failure is only a judgment about short-term results. If you have not reached your goal, it means that you have not reached your goal yet. Failure is not a sensible idea because you cannot prove a negative. You cannot say you have failed unless you give up, and that is your choice.
  • We already have all the resources we need and can create them. There are no unresourceful people, only unresourceful states of mind. In coaching, we’re working to bring out your inner resources. Our deeper wisdom is waiting to be discovered.
  • All behaviour has a purpose. Our actions are not random; we are always trying to achieve something. We are always moving towards some goal, although we may not be aware of it. Set your own goals and desired outcomes because if you do not, there are many people who will happily set them for you.
  • Having a choice is better than having no choice. If we come up with a better choice according to your values and beliefs in coaching, then you will take it. What better choices are possibilities right now?
  • You are doing the best you can, and you can probably do better.
  • You create your own reality. We all have different experiences, interests, moods, commitments, likes, dislikes and preoccupations. So we form different beliefs from our life experiences; we pursue different goals and have different values. These goals, beliefs and values are the main features of our mental maps, which shape the world we perceive. We act as if these mental maps are real. Our mental maps may be good ones, allowing much freedom to explore, or they may be limited, with tight boundaries, hedged with seeming dangers. I, as your coach, have my map, and I respect and work with you and your worldview. The intention of coaching is not to bring your worldview in line with mine but to give you more choices in your world.
  • Coaching is an equal, synergistic partnership. We co-create desired outcomes together.
  • Relationships are more than the sum of their parts. If you think one and one only make two, it is only because you have forgotten the power of the “and” – the power of the connection.
  • You already have the answer. I, as your coach, have the questions. You know you know more than you think you do.
NLP in Coaching

Within your personalised personal or business coaching package, you can ask me to run one session of your program focused on the Limiting Beliefs exercise mentioned in an earlier article; followed by working on PAW together and then making the shift towards Empowering Beliefs.

Just ask me to set this up for you for a coming session and together we can co-create an empowering outcome or three and the action steps you can choose to take you forward.
